David Crockett High School Students Lead “If I Had a Hammer” Project at South Central Elementary
Jonesborough, Tenn. - Fifth through eighth grade students at South Central Elementary School (SCES) participated in the “If I Had a Hammer” program, a unique, hands-on learning experience led by David Crockett High School students enrolled in Construction Core, Residential Construction I, and Residential Construction II classes.
The “If I Had a Hammer” project brings together high school and elementary students to collaborate on building a Hammer House, a structure large enough for the entire class to step inside. During the two-hour session, SCES students worked in teams under the guidance of their high school mentors, using real tools such as hammers and drills, and wearing tool belts and safety goggles to complete the construction project.
The program emphasizes teamwork, creativity, and the real-life application of math skills. The high school students acted as team leaders, sharing their construction knowledge and guiding the younger students through each step.
Principal J.W. McKinney of South Central Elementary praised the program, stating, “This is a fantastic way for students to see how math applies outside the classroom. Watching our high school students lead and mentor their younger peers makes the learning truly memorable and meaningful.”
“If I Had a Hammer,” created by Perry Wilson, is designed to inspire students to connect academic concepts with real-world skills. Through this collaborative project, both elementary and high school students gain valuable experience in leadership, communication, and practical problem-solving.
