Two Daniel Boone High School seniors have been recognized as semifinalists in the 72nd annual National Merit Scholarship program, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced Tuesday, September 8th.
The honorees—Atticus W. Francisco and Lucas N. Williams—are among more than 16,000 semifinalists nationwide competing for approximately 6,700 National Merit Scholarships worth roughly $24 million to be awarded next spring.
Semifinalists who meet specific advancement criteria will progress to the finalist level of competition. The corporation expects approximately 95% of semifinalists to attain finalist standing, with roughly half of those finalists ultimately receiving National Merit Scholarship awards.
To advance to finalist status, candidates must demonstrate outstanding academic achievement throughout high school, secure endorsement from a school official, submit an essay, and earn qualifying SAT or ACT scores. Finalist selection also considers participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership, employment history, and honors and awards.
National Merit Scholarship winners for 2027 will be announced between April and July.
