Below are suggested activities and assignments to complete while we are out of school. Please log onto your google account for links, passwords, and assignments for each day. To view the materials and assignments in the Science Google Classroom, you must first join our Science Google Classroom. Log onto your google account and enter our Google classroom code: cc7zxaz.
Science: Student's can access the handbook and digital interractive by logging onto the Inspire Science website and clicking on student lesson. This will take you step by step through the entire lesson. In the Science google classroom, follow instructions to access Inspire Science at home. You will have access to the handbook, digital interractice, videos and lessons to help you complete the assignments in your student's Be a Scientist Notebook, that you brought home from school. At anytime throughout our break, you may log onto MobyMax for additional material.
Monday, May 11-Watch the video, "Building Simple Machines: A glass of milk please." Then, answer the discussion questions and then turn in your assignment.
Tuesday, May 12- Yesterday, you began designing a simple machine to solve a common problem at home. Today, you will refine your design and begin building your simple machine. The only rules are that you should use things that you find around your home to solve a common problem at home.
Wednesday, May 13- Test your design. Today, you will complete your design. Make sure to test it out with a family member. Tomorrow, you will be asked to do a short presentation of your design during the google meet.
Thursday, May 14- Google meet, presentation of simple machines and Science Experiment by Mrs. White. Make sure to keep watching your math google classroom for more information.
Friday, May 15-With permission from your parents/guardians, watch the video "Solving Complex Problems with Simple Machines"

Monday, April 6- Forces and Motion Virtual Lab. You will find the assignment , instructions, and link in the Science Google Classroom unter the Forces and Motion topic.
Tuesday, April 7- Complete the Inquiry Activity found on pages 275-276 in your Be a Scientist Notebook, that you brought home. You will need someone at home to be your partner. After you complete the activity, record the data and answer question 8. You will then need to log onto the Inspire Science website to access your Science Handbook pages 142-143. This access will be found under the EXPLAIN tab in the student lesson.
Wednesday, April 8-Complete pages 278-279 in your Be a Scientist Notebook, that you brought home. You will have to log onto the Inspire Science website to access your Science Handbook pages 143-145. You will also need to access the simulation. These can all be found under the EXPLAIN tab in the student lesson.
Thursday, April 9- Legends of Learning "Forces and Motion" assignment in Science Google Classroom. Just follow the link.
Friday, April 10- Good Friday. No Assignment
Monday, April 13- Complete Forces and Motion lesson AND lesson Test in MobyMax. Due today.
Tuesday, April 14-Lab-Today, you will be doing a simulation. Follow the link in the Science google classroom, under the Forces and Motion topic, called "Energy Skate Park." You can experiment with different types of ramps and friction by changing the items on the right of the screen. Just drop the skater in the ramp and whatch him skate. Try lots of variations and see the different results. Make sure to mark turned in when completed.
Wednesday, April 15- In the Science google classroom under the Forces and Motion topic, with your parent/guardians permission, watch the video about Friction.
Thursday, April 16- In your Be a Scientist Notebook, you will be completing pages 280-281. This lab is all about friction. If you do not have the exact supplies called for in the lab, you may use other things that you already have at home. For example, if you do not have a toy car, maybe use something else that can roll, like a can of green beans. If you do not have a meter stick, try using a yard stick. You could even test friction by rolling a ball on carpet and then comparing the results to rolling a ball on hard wood floors. Make sure to create a graph so that you can compare the results.
Friday, April, 17-In your Be a Scientist Notebook pgs. 282-283, you will be completing a performance task using the Engineering Design Process. There are links to this process in the Science google classroom under the Engineering Design Process topic. The performance task calls for 9 plastic cups, but you may use any items you may have at home in order to complete the task. Don't forget to write down all your procedures.
Monday, April 20- Please complete the Legends of Learning activity on "Gravitational Force" by following the Legends of Learning link in the google classroom under the topic "Gravity"
Tuesday, April 21- Follow the link in google classroom to the virtual simulation on Gravitational force: Basics. Experiment with the simulation then mark "turned in."
Wednesday, April 22- Please complete the Legends of Learning activity on "Affect of MAss and Distance on Gravity" by following the Legends of Learning link in the google classroom under the topic "Gravity"
Thursday, April 23- Today, you will watch a Youtube video about gravity. Just follow the link labeled "Defining Gravity Video" in the Science google classroom. Make sure to get permission from your parent/guardian before watching the video.
Friday, April 24- Let's explore more about gravity. In the google classroom, follow the link titled "Galileo on the Moon" and answer the discussion questions, listed in the directions, in your science journal.
Monday, April 27- With permission from your parents/guardians, watch the video on weightlessness under the gravity topic. Then, answer the attached discussion questions. Remember to turn in your assignment and submit your discussion question answers.
Tuesday, April 28-We are starting to study Energy today. With permission from your parents/guardians,, go to the science google classroom and watch the Bill Nye video about Energy under the Energy topic.
Wednesday, April 29- Complete the Legends of Learning assignment in the science google classroom called Speed and Energy under the Energy topic.
Thursday, April 30-Google meet. More information coming.
Friday, May 1- With permission from your parents/guardians, watch "The Future of Energy-Energy Basics" video under the energy topic. Then, answer the attached discussion questions. Remember to turn in your assignment and submit your discussion question answers.
Monday, May 4-We will wrap up our study of energy by looking at what we can do to reduce our energy usage. Watch the "Energy Club" video, under the Energy tab, and answer the short discussion questions.
Tuesday, May 5- Today, we will begin learning about simple machines. In the Science google classroom, watch the Bill Nye video about simple machines.
Wednesday, May 6- Legends of Learning, World Traveler Animals playlist
Thursday, May 7- Google meet. Follow the instructions and link in the math google classroom.
Friday, May 8- This video shows ways to solve problems using simple machines. As you watch the video, "Building simple machines-plant quencher", I wnat you to think of a problem you could solve using a simple machine. Next week, you will be challenged to create a simple machine to solve a problem.

Fifth grade, here we come! As you are aware, this is our class web site! I am so glad you have decided to visit! Use our web site to see homework updates (if there is snow or something ;), the county callender, what project we are working on, important information, extra credit opportunities, or maybe find out what's for lunch. I do my best to keep the website updated with information that will help keep students and parents on track, especially if there is a question about a due date or some instructions. Please, email me with any concerns or questions. Thanks again for letting me be a part of your students' lives. But as always, YOU are your child's most important teacher!

Let me take a “SCIFIE!”
That’s right, a Science selfie, Scifie! We want to see you doing science activities. If you are doing any activity associated with Science, take a Scifie of yourself! Then email it to me so I can add it to the photo album on our web page. Students can earn 5 extra credit points for each Scifie they submit, with a 20 points max per grading period. Be ready to explain your Scifie to the class so that we can appreciate your scientific selfie moment!
Math Important Information: ARE YOU READY? WE ARE TN MATH READY!
TN Ready! Math is designed to show math teachers areas of need in the basic components of math, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division,decimals, fractions, word problems, and geometry. Students need to be completely honest with their understanding of TN Ready! Math. If they don't understand a problem or they get it wrong, then they must mark it wrong. Each day, we go over their TN Ready! work and I explain each problem for every set. After each 9 weeks, I take up their TN Ready! work and, according to their bar graph, I group students into their area of need. For example, if a student gets all the division problems correct but missed alot of fraction problems, I would work with that student in a small group on fractions. Please encourage your student to be VERY honest about how many questions they get correct and their understanding of each component. All the questions on the quizes and tests come directly from their TN Ready! Math work in the classroom. Friday will be TN Ready! quiz day.

All About Me
My name is April White and I grew up right here in East Tennessee. I went to University School and graduated from ETSU in 1996. I also hold a master's degree from Tusculum College. That same year, I married a wonderful man, my husband Monty. We love to camp, SCUBA dive, play soccer, play baseball, and go on trips. My oldest daughter, Emily, and her husband, John, live in Charleston, SC where she attends the College of Charleston and he is in the Navy. My youngest daughter, Elizabeth, is an athlete at King University where she is an active member of their acro and tumbling team while studying Biology and Psychology. Ethan attends Daniel Boone High School where he enjoys football and baseball. I lenjoy summer because I value spending time with my family.
I have been teaching 3rd grade at Ridgeview since it opened in the Fall of 2008. Before that, I taught 3rd grade at Gray Elementary School. I also taught fourth grade. But I am currently teaching math and science in fifth grade. I know we will have a great year. I truly enjoy teaching and love to see my students learn. I believe that all children are capable of great things if just given the chance and positive support!
