West View School is located on Old State Route 34, ten miles west of Jonesborough and eight miles east of the Limestone birthplace of David Crockett.
Approximately 450 students are enrolled in grades K-8. West View School is a rural community school attempting to meet the many needs of our students.
The faculty and staff include two administrators, 33 fulltime teachers, two part-time teachers, thirteen instructional assistants, a clerk, and a secretary.
The school was originally built in 1959. The size of the building has been increased on three different occasions. Most recently, six classrooms and a teachers' workroom, were added in the spring of 2000. Other areas of the school were refurbished to make an excellent facility for students, faculty, and staff.
The instructional program at West View stresses core knowledge in subject areas and promotion of social skill development, character growth, and self-responsibility. Meeting the individual needs of each student is a key element in the program.
Teachers create a positive learning environment, which is conducive to personal growth and learning. A full time school counselor works with students in the classroom, in groups, and with individuals. The counselor works with community businesses, organizations, churches, and individuals to provide meals for families during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. These groups also provide Christmas presents for many of our students each year.
The faculty promotes and sponsors student participation in essay, poetry, art contests, spelling bees, peer help activities and athletic events. Participation in extracurricular activities is an integral part of the total school program. These include band, baseball, basketball, cheerleading, chorus, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, football, soccer, softball, student advisory board, track, and volleyball.
Parent and community involvement are important to the students at West View School. The PTO, and Pass (Parents Assisting Student Success) volunteers are a vital part of the educational process. AeroJet is the school's Partner in Education which involves the collaboration of industry and education. Parents and community members also provide input on important school committees. Various community groups use West View School facilities as well. The Pioneer Shooters sponsor youth basketball.
