  • May 20, 2020

    First Graders,

Although our year ended early, I am grateful for the memories we made together.  I can't wait to see you again. I know you will do great things in second grade!  I am so proud of you!

Keep reading, keep learning, and keep playing.

    Enjoy your summer!

I hope everyone has had a wonderful week so far!  I added a virtual field trip to the Georgia Aquarium on your Class Dojo portfolio.

    Follow these instructions:

Have you ever been to an aquarium before? If you click on the link above, you can take a virtual field trip tothe Georgia Aquarium. I want you to look at all the different animals. When you find your favorite animal at the aquarium, write about it and tell me why it's your favorite. Don't forget to use TREE- Topic Sentence, 3 Reasons for your opinion, and an ending. You can upload your work on your portfolio or have your parent email it.

    Keep up the excellent work!

I hope you enjoyed your gift bag last week!  I look forward to seeing all of your creations.  You can snap a pic if you would like and upload it to your Class Dojo Portfolio!

If you would like to turn in a completed Learning Activity Packet, there will be tubs with dividers outside the gym doors.  Please be sure to write down your child's name, grade level, and teacher on the front of the packet.

Here is a simple daily schedule for learning at home.  Spend 15 minutes working on your Learning Activity Packet, 15 minutes practicing Sight Words and No Excuse Words, 20 minutes on Freckle.com or Mathplayground.com, and 20 minutes reading and writing.  You can read books that you have at home, or read books on Epic Books for Kids and Benchmark Universe.  Just be sure to read both fiction and nonfiction texts.  This does NOT have to be completed all at once!  Spend some time on one activity and take a break!  Do what works best for you.

The most important thing you can do every day is read and write!  See the list of comprehension questions below for fiction and nonfiction books.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

I hope everyone enjoyed a restful spring break!  Be sure to stop by the school on Tuesday or Thursday (9:00-12:00) of this week to pick up a fun gift bag.

To the left of this page you will find a tab titled "Frequently Used Classroom Websites."  Here you will find a link to Teach Your Monster to Read, Freckle, and Benchmark Universe.

If possible, try logging in to Benchmark Universe and find your personalized library.  Read the text and follow instructions to complete the activity.  Then, log in to your Class Dojo portfolio and submit a picture of the activity you completed in your reading journal.

Please email me at siffordh@wcde.org if you need usernames and passwords for any of the websites.

    Enjoy your week!

    updated March 27, 2020

Hello, First Grade Family!  As we continue to navigate the waters of school closure, we will periodically update class webpages with activities and websites that can be accessed from home.  Please check out the "Online Resources" tab to the left of this page.  You will find several FREE Reading and Math websites.  You should have received an email giving you FREE access to EPIC Books for Kids.  Please use this website to read fiction and nonfiction texts!  Mathplayground.com is another FREE website frequently used in our classroom.  Please play any of the first grade games to practice addition and subtraction.  This is a great time to work on those No Excuse Words and Sight Words, also found to the left of this page.  Please email me at siffordh@wcde.org or send a message via Class Dojo if you have any questions.  Stay well!
