• Meet Your Teacher, Rose Ellen Thomas!

    Biographical Information: My name is Rose Ellen Thomas. I was born and reared in San Juan, Puerto Rico. My parents brought us up with strong family values, a love of God, and speaking both English and Spanish. 

    My Family: I have been married to my husband, Norman, for 34 years.  My sister, Dorothy Lee, lives in Puerto Rico. I also have two wonderful dogs, Prancie, and Macallan, who bring lots of energy and love to our lives!

    My Education: I am a graduate of Milligan College and East Tennessee State University. I hold a bachelor’s degree from Milligan College and a master’s degree from East Tennessee State University. I am certified to teach elementary grades 1st-8th, special education K-9th, Spanish, ESL K-12th, and I am also certified in the areas of administration and supervision.

    My Teaching Experience: I have taught for 35 years in Washington County. I have taught at Jonesborough Elementary/resource, West View Elementary/resource and CDC, Gray/CDC, Inclusion 5th-8th, 4th grade, system-wide Elementary Spanish, 2ndgrade at Ridgeview Elementary, and this will be my fifth year teaching ESL! I have met the requirements to be classified as a highly qualified teacher.

    Some of My Favorite Things: I love gardening and cooking! I love to read and visit historical sites. I enjoy hiking in the mountains and exploring different areas. I love being with my family and friends! I really like going to the movies and listening to different types of music. One of my favorite authors is Mark Twain!  One of my favorite quotes from Mark Twain is:

     "Wrinkles should merely indicate where smiles have been....."

    My Teaching Philosophy: In my classroom, I will promote an atmosphere of safety, trust, and respect. I will work hard to build a sense of community among my students, and I will emphasize the idea of teamwork. I value cooperation and collaboration both in my classroom, and as I work with my peers. I believe that great things can happen when we work together! Teaching ELL students at Boones Creek Elementary, David Crockett High School, Jonesborough Middle, Jonesborough Elementary, and University High School will be schools where I will really feel like a part of strong communities and part of winning teams!

    I will be your son/daughter’s teacher for an entire year of his/her life. I don’t take that responsibility lightly. I will try to balance the year with Character Building and Academics with as much fun as possible! Thank you for trusting me.
