Nutrition Nuggets from CSH

Bill Aimed to Get All Junk Food Out of Schools

Representative Lynn Woolsey of California introduced a bill entitled, " The Child Nutrition Promotion and School Lunch Protection Act." It is reported that Congress will address this bill, when they reauthorize the Child Nutrition Act later this year.

Woolsey's bill would require the U.S. Department of Agriculture to update the nutrition standards for foods sold during the school day alongside school meals in cafeterias, vending machines, school stores, and elsewhere in school grounds. These standards have not been updated in thirty years!

The legislation is backed by CSPI and the National PTA, as well as a number of advocacy groups including the American Dental Association, Ammerican Diabetes Association, Save the Children and School Nutrition.
