President of Achieve to Address Role of K-12 Schools in Attracting Jobs and Capital Investment
NASHVILLE – Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen and Economic and Community Development Commissioner Matt Kisber today announced Michael Cohen, president of the nationally recognized education reform organization Achieve, will keynote the Commissioner’s Luncheon on September 16, 2010 during the 57th annual Governor’s Conference on Economic and Community Development in Nashville, Tenn.
Founded in 1996 by a coalition of business leaders and the nation’s governors, Achieve is an independent, bipartisan organization dedicated to helping states raise standards and graduation requirements, as well as improve assessment and accountability. In 2005, Achieve created the American Diploma Project, of which Tennessee is one of 35 participating states. Governor Bredesen also serves as co-chair of the Achieve Board of Directors.

CoverKids Kicks Off Annual Enrollment Effort

Program Information Will Be Included in Back to School Packets
NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen today announced the 2010 Back to School CoverKids outreach campaign to help enroll Tennessee’s children in the state’s free, comprehensive health insurance plan.
“Since 2007, we’ve used the back to school time as an opportunity to inform and remind Tennessee families about CoverKids,” said Governor Bredesen. “There are still children in our state who don’t have health insurance, and this program offers an additional option for families with uninsured kids.”

New Textbooks Available for Public Review

NASHVILLE – New Mathematics textbooks proposed for use in the public schools are now on display in ten district textbook collection sites located across Tennessee.
Citizens interested in reviewing the textbooks being considered for use beginning with the 2011-2012 school year should contact the director of the textbook collection site in their area. Parents, family members, educators and the general public are encouraged to visit the textbook sites and to participate in the review process.

Bredesen Announces Pre-K Now Available in All 95 Counties

NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen and Education Commissioner Tim Webb today announced that Tennessee’s Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten program now extends to every school district in all 95 counties of the state. This marks the first Voluntary Pre-K classrooms for Sumner County and Washington County Schools.
For the 2010-11 academic year, the state’s program includes 934 Pre-K classrooms with total funding of approximately $84.7 million.
“I’m extremely pleased our high quality Pre-K classrooms are now available in every county of the state,” said Bredesen. “Pre-K is one of the best investments we can make in the lives of our young people, and now that opportunity is available to more parents and families who want it for their children across the state of Tennessee.”
