 | As you approach Room 109 you will be welcomed to enter the Readers' Club. |
 | Once inside our room, all areas of the classroom indicate that we are readers! |
 | Welcome to Room 109. This is the view from our classroom door. You will be able to take a tour around our room to find out all the wonderful parts of our Readers' Club. |
 | At the front of the classroom there is a Focus Wall that gives information regarding our Reading and Spelling words, our essential learning for the Readers and Writers Workshop and our Math focus for the week. The whiteboard is used for our Morning Message and teacher directed lessons.
|
 | The Focus Wall is ready for our first week of school. |
 | A close-up view of the whiteboard that is used for instruction. Modeling work that is used in whole group lessons, morning message, math skills and much more is a visual mode of instruction. |
 | To the left side of the whiteboard you will arrive at our "meeting area". In this area we will meet for our reading, writing, spelling, math, read aloud lessons. The chart stand is used for teacher directed instruction. |
 | - The Kid's Cafe board showcases reading strategies that are included for:
- Comprehension
- Accuracy
- Fluency
- Expanding Vocabulary
|
 | Math skills are taught during our Morning Meeting. We learn skills such as counting by fives, tens, money amounts, telling time, addition facts, number sense, and more! |
 | The meeting area is surrounded by our fiction section of the class library. The books are sorted in tubs by topic or genre. The children choose books to put in their personal book shelf baskets. |
 | The writing and word work area contains different types of paper and materials to use in creating pieces by our authors. |
 | The non-fiction library is in an area all to itself. These baskets are sorted by topic. Above the bookshelf, various scientific materials are housed and available for research. |
 | The computers for student use are in the back of the classroom. The computers are used for Accelerated Reading, computer software to practice our skills in math, reading, spelling, and phonics. |
 | Reading "book nooks" are scheduled around the room. Two students are reading partners and can practice reading to self, reading to each other, and practicing our reading skills! Each week the partners rotate to a new book nook. |
 | While using mini-lessons when the teacher is showing the students how to use new strategies for CAFE, writing, or math, the students are then given opportunities to practice using these skills. |
 | Desks are arranged in small groups of five or six students. Book baskets for each student are stored in the center of the desks. Each student has a basket containing their poetry book and books on their personal reading level. |
 | A handy storage bench is placed between groups of desks to hold each student's book basket. It also gives room for hand sanitizer, kleenex, and a trash basket so that materials are handy. |
 | Math materials are used to reinforce and provide practice for the skills that are introduced in each Math chapter. A rack above the air conditioner provides storage for projects that the students are involved in. |
 | The sink area is an asset to filling our water bottles each morning. Water bottles can be kept in our chair pockets for frequent water breaks. The bulletin board will be used to showcase our work.
|
 | EPIC: Washington County schools encourage character building using the EPIC program. Books that also encourage making others feel good about themselves, as well as "filling our own buckets" of good choices are used by students to say 'thank you" to their friends. Using pom-poms, we will fill the buckets on the chart. |
 | Phonemic awareness is a major prerequisite in reading. These pocket charts are used to sort word families. $1 pocket charts from Target were applied in the front of the teacher's desk and makes a word work area. |
 | The teacher's desk area is set to the side of the classroom. This enables the majority of classroom space for the children's use. |
 | The circle shaped table is used for our writing area. Students can choose to work on their writing during the Daily 5 choice time. The rectangle table will soon be replaced with a kidney shaped table funded by Donors Choose.org grant that I proposed. |
 | The small group table will be used for reading instruction. Small groups are given guided reading on their levels: approaching, on-level, and beyond level. Individuals also meet for strategies and skills that will make them a better reader. (The table was provided through the Donors Choose site!)
|
 | The Daily 5 Choice board is used for the students to indicate their choice of: - Read to Self
- Read with Someone
- Work on Writing
- Work on Words
- Listen to Reading
|
 | Daily 5 choice cards are stored in separate containers. Each day a card is placed next to each student's name so that a variety of skills/strategies will be practiced. |
