DCHS Visual & Performing Arts Courses

Art I

Prerequisite: None
Credit: 1

Students receive basic instruction in the fundamentals of art. Fall semester includes six weeks of art history and twelve weeks of exploring the basic elements of drawing using a variety of media. Spring semester is a continuation of drawing skills and an introduction to pen and ink, lettering, and pottery.


Art II

Prerequisite: None
Credit: 1

An intensive advanced course in design, composition, drawing techniques, and painting. Students must provide their own sketchbooks. One six weeks is devoted to a comprehensive design unit and fiber design. Drawing materials include colored pencils, ink, and pencil. Painting will concentrate on transparent watercolors, tempera, and acrylics. Additional work will be done in printmaking and pottery. Third and fourth year students will explore calligraphy, scratchboard, papermaking, and handmade books.


Art IV/Photography

Prerequisite: 35 mm Camera
Credit: 1

Admission to class is by application with final decision being made by panel. This class is open only to 10th-12th grade. Selected students must provide a 35 mm SLR film camera for their own use, as the school does not provide these cameras. This class provides instruction in black and white processing with emphasis on artistic expression while learning the technical aspect of the camera. History, vocabulary, basic use of a 35 mm camera, elements of photography, and proper presentation of work areas are covered. Students will develop and print enlargements of their photographs as part of the darkroom exercises. Some digital photography will be explored second semester, however, students do not have to purchase a separate camera for digital use. Camera phones may NOT be used for this class. Fee required.

Theater Arts

Prerequisite: "C" or higher English average, acceptable attendance, successful application/interview

The students in this class will learn the basics of theatre performance through various exercises and activities. Required assignments include storytelling; writing, directing, and performing short scenes; participation in the annual school play; performing Dr. Seuss stories for elementary school students; and teaching material to the class via a collaborative project. Students must be able to spend time after school for rehearsals and projects.


Instrumental Band

Prerequisite: Band Experience
Credit: 1

Band, marching and concert, combine skills learned in previous band situations with new concepts which create a learning experience that will enhance any student's development.


Vocal Music/Men's Chorus

Prerequisite: None
Credit: 1

Open to all male students, priority given to freshman and sophomores. Junior and senior students must have permission from instructor before they can participate. Students will learn to read music, rhythms, and correct vocal techniques used for performance. Concerts are required. No experience necessary.


Vocal Music/Women's Chorus

Prerequisite: None
Credit: 1

Open to all female students, priority given to freshman and sophomores. Junior and senior students must have permission from instructor before they can participate. Maximum number of students will be 80. Maximum number of years to participate is two. Students will learn to read music, rhythms, and correct vocal techniques used for performance. Concerts are required. No experience is necessary.

Vocal Music/Crockett Congregation

Prerequisite: Audition/Instructor Select
Credit: 1

This is a mixed vocal group (STAB). These students must have vocal experience. This class uses learned skills to study and perform more complex vocal literature. After school, rehearsals and performances are required.


Opus/Show Choir

Prerequisite: Audition/Instructor Select
Credit: 1

A select group of 12-16 singers and dancers who learn popular styles of music literature for performance purposes. Students must be able to hold their individual voicing, perform choreography, and attend after school rehearsals and performances.


Vocal Music/Madrigal Singers

Prerequisite: Audition/Instructor Select
Credit: 1

A select group of mixed voices (STAB) 18-20 singers who perform music from all areas of time, with a major concentration on 16th Century style. Students must be able to sing and hold their own voice part, costume, performance, and rehearsals all required.


Music Theory

Prerequisite: College Bound Music Students
Credit: 1

These students must be a Senior or a Junior with prior music experience and knowledge. Senior's who will be attending college to major in music will get first priority for this class. Total number of students is fifteen. These students will learn to compose and understand musical form. Students will have head's up on placement exam for college theory.


General Music

Prerequisite: None
Credit: 1

Open to all students as an explanatory music course dealing with many areas of music from note reading, instrument playing, recording and sound equipment to the study of great music literature from different periods of history. Offers opportunities for technical assistance in choral production. This class is non-performing.
