Health Science Education

This course is an introduction to broad standards that serve as a foundation for Health Care Occupations and functions across health services. Units included are academics in health care communications systems, legal responsibilities, ethics, teamwork, and safety practices. This is the first class that
must
be taken before any other health science course can be taken. Grades 9-12
Health Informatics
Prerequisite: Health Science Ed.
Credit: 1
This course will provide knowledge of ways to document an individual care in the home, hospital, long term care, outpatient, and others. Careers could include medical records, health management, risk management, unit coordinator, computer operator, social worker, patient advocate, hospital chaplain clinical, department director, community services specialist Computer Security Specialist, Data Analyst, Epidemiologist, Health Writer, Medical Librarian, Medical Video Produce and others. Grade 10-12
Anatomy and Physiology
Prerequisite: Biology
Credit: 1
Designed for students to develop an understanding and functioning of the human body. This course may serve as a science credit if the teacher is highly qualified, which they are here at DCHS. The course uses the same textbook as Walters State Community College. Grades 10-12
Medical Therapeutics
Prerequisite: Health Science Ed.
Credit: 1
This course provides knowledge and skills to maintain or change to the health status of an individual over time. This could include careers such as dental, dietetics, medical assistance, home health, nursing, pharmacy, respiratory, social work, nutritionist, Physician, Psychiatrist, Psychologist, Veterinarian, Gerontology Service Provider, Medical Practice owner, Attorney for health care, and others. Here at DCHS, we offer a certification in Pharmacy Technician. Students who are 18 may take the state certification test. Grade 10-12
Diagnostic Medicine
Prerequisite: Health Science Ed.

Diagnostic medicine creates a picture of an individual's health status at a single point in time. This could include careers as cardiology, imaging, medical laboratory, radiography, nuclear medicine, sterotactic radiosurgery, speech pathologists, respiratory, respiratory therapist, clinical laboratory technician, pathologists, medical doctor Histotechnologist, Orthotist, Plastic Surgeon, Prosthetist, Prosthodonist, and others. Grade 10-12
Clinical Internship
Prerequisite: Hlth Sci Ed. & min. 1 Adv. course
Credit: 1
Students may choose to complete a clinical internship after completing Medical Therapeutics. Diagnostic Medicine, Health Informatics, Support Services, Rehabilitative Therapies, Nursing Education, or Emergency Medical Services. The internships are designed to be completed in a hospital, nursing home, rehab center, medical office, or other health care facility.

Nursing Education
Prerequisite: Health Science Ed.
Credit: 1
Consists of 18 units of study dealing with direct bedside nursing care. Clinical experience will consist of supervised practice in the nursing home as well as demonstrations in the classroom. Students can be registered by Tennessee Department of Health after the completion of the course; 100 hours clinical and theory, passing a state test (both written and skills) and will be job ready. Students may complete a clinical internship following this course jobs include; Registered Nurse, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Midwife, Nurse Anesthetist, Forensic Nurse and others. Grade 11-12
Support Services

In this course you will learn knowledge and skills necessary to provide an environment for the delivery of health care. Careers could include central supply, facility maintenance, food services, interior decorating, housekeeping, biomedical engineering, epidemiology, Biomedical Technician and others. Grade 10-12
Biomedical Applications
Prerequisite: Biology & Health Science Ed.

This course provides an overview of biomedical research applications. Topics covered will include understanding laboratory procedures fundamental to biomedical research which include recombinant DNA, protein purification, cell and tissue culture. Additional topics include communication skills, the history and development of the field of biomedical research and understanding the legal environment and technology transfer aspects of biomedical research. Jobs include research as a medical doctor or a PhD, Biochemist, Bioinformatics, Biomedical Chemist, Biostatistician, Cell Biologist, Clinical Trails Research, Geneticist, Pharmaceutical Scientist, Quality Assurance Professional, Quality Control Professional, Regulatory Affairs Specialist, Research Scientist, Toxicologist or a Biomedical Engineer, Biomedical patent attorney and others. Grade 11-12
Forensic Science
Prerequisite: Biology & Health Science Ed.

This course is an overview of how science is applied to solving crimes. Topics including history of forensic sciences, collecting of evidence, analyzing results and hands-on applications of many laboratory techniques used in solving crimes and identifying people and future careers. Students will participate in a mock (staged) crime scene to apply knowledge and skills gained. Jobs include forensic nurses, odontologists, pathologist, psychiatrists, crime scene investigators, medical examiners/coroners, forensic technicians, criminalists, toxicologists, wildlife specialists, forensic engineers, accountants, computer specialists, aviation and construction accident investigators, forensic photographers, skull reconstructionist, document and polygraph examiners. Grade 11-12
Rehabilitative Therapies
Prerequisite: Anat & Phys
and Health Sci. Ed.
Credit: 1
This course will focus on enabling the person to live to the fullest capacity possible. Units will include sports medicine, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech/language therapy, sports medicine, art, music, dance therapy, and others. This course may be complementary with Sports Medicine and may offer training with an athletic trainer. Grade 11-12
Emergency Medical Services
Prerequisite: Health Sci. Ed. & Bio
Credit: 1
Designed for students who are interested in becoming an Emergency Room Physician, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic, or Emergency Room Nurse. Students may take the EMT course at North East State community college their Senior year and become nationally certified. Grade 11-12
