Family and Consumer Science

This course is a foundation course designed to assist students in developing the core knowledge and skills to manage their lives.  Emphasis is on leadership, human development, family and parenting education, consumer economics and resource management, housing and living environments, nutrition and foods, textiles and apparel, and career prep.  Critical skills in decision-making, problem solving, critical thinking, technology, work and family management, and workplace readiness are reinforced through authentic experiences.  This course allows students to select specific areas for future concentrated study.


Child Development

Prerequisite:  None
Credit:  1/2

This course prepares individuals to understand children's physical, mental, emotional, and social growth and development, and to acquire knowledge and skills essential to the care and guidance of children.  This course draws on the aspects of the social and biological sciences. 

Textiles and Clothing

Prerequisite:  None
Credit:  1/2

This course prepares individuals to understand the social, psychological, and physiological aspects of clothing and textiles; the nature, acquisition, and use of clothing and textile products; the selection, construction, maintenance, and alteration of clothing and textile products; and the effect of consumer choices on the individual and the family.


Nutrition and Foods

Prerequisite:  None
Credit:  1

This course prepares students to understand the principles of nutrition; the relationship of nutrition to health and well-being; the selection, preparation, and care of meal management to meet the individual and family food needs; patterns of living; and the optimum use of the dollar.

Foundations of the Hospitality Industry

Prerequisite:  None
Credit:  1/2

This course introduces students to the hospitality industry, its various components, and available career opportunities.  Content will provide a foundation for further study in the areas of culinary arts, lodging, travel, and tourism.
