This course combines principles of rhetoric and strategies for reading and writing into a course designed to cover content equivalent to the first college year of English. The course requires reading and writing in a variety of rhetorical modes. The primary goal is to encourage development and subsequent growth in writing and language analysis. Students will read and discuss literature of all genres and then translate that knowledge into coherent writings, culminating in an extensive research-based argument essay that extends the skills learned in this course. Students with proficient scores on the AP exam will earn a college credit.

AP English is designed for the student with exceptional in reading comprehension and writing. Students are taught test taking skills for the College-Bound AP Test. Those who are able to pass the test in spring may be exempt from the freshmen English in college.
Creative Writing/ACT Preparation

The class has a dual purpose. From nonfiction to poetry, students are encouraged to write creatively in a variety of genres. These writings inspire creativity and teach mastery of concepts in language, literature, and writing. Taught style, purpose, form, and function, students learn how to internalize language skills and how to communicate effectively.
Revision and editing are core components in the class. The class also teaches a variety of test-taking skills and strategies. Students prepare for the ACT through numerous course topics in language and literature and by applying the learned skills to the practice tests. The course offers students the opportunity to acquire both the academic skills in language and literature and the creativity and fresh approach for writing and reading which enhances individual experience and personal achievement.

This class is a nontraditional course that integrates the standards of writing, reading, viewing/representing, and speaking/listening with a rigorous workplace-oriented approach. Students will comprehend and produce a wide variety of texts; recognize and create practical and persuasive forms of communication, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills necessary to enable students to deal with cultural and ethnic diversity in a rapidly changing world.

This advanced studies program is a cooperative effort between local high schools and Northeast State Technical Community College which provides an opportunity for quality high school students to get a "Jump Start" on college. Students may earn up to 12 semester hours of transferable college credits and satisfy specific courses required for high school graduation. This course is taught by NESTCC professors and also requires a fee.
