The Community

Spanning 330 square miles, Washington County Schools serves the educational needs of children in Gray, Jonesborough, Limestone, and other local communities. Located in the shadow of the Southern Appalachians, Washington County is one of the fastest growing regions in America with a population of 111,600 in 2004. Washington County continues to offer an attractive climate to both tourism and industry and enjoys a diversified economic base. Washington County Schools consists of two high schools, two middle schools, eight elementary schools, one adult high school, and one alternative school.

The School

David Crockett High School is a comprehensive four-year high school enrolling 1250 students in grades nine through twelve. The school opened in the fall of 1971 and graduated its first senior class in the spring of 1972. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the College Board accredit David Crockett High School.

The Curriculum

The academic program is organized on a traditional period schedule. A maximum load is seven credits per year with students carrying seven class periods per day for 180 days.

A minimum of 20 credits is required for graduation. (½ credit=1 semester; 1 credit=2 semesters/full year). Graduation requirements for all students include:

  • 4 credits (4 years) English;
  • 3 credits (3 years) mathematics;
  • 3 credits (3 years) science;
  • 3 credits (3 years) social studies;
  • 1 ½ credits (1 ½ years) wellness.

Additional courses for university path students include:

  • 2 credits (2 years) foreign language;
  • 1 credit (1 year) fine arts;
  • 2.5 credits electives.

Additional courses for technical path students include:

  • 4 credits in the technical program of study;
  • 1.5 credits electives.

All students must pass the Tennessee Gateway examinations in mathematics, science, and language arts to receive a regular education diploma.

Advanced Placement (AP) courses are offered in U.S. History, Government United States, Economics, Calculus AB, Statistics, English Literature, and English Language.

Advanced Courses are offered in all academic subject areas.

Grading and Ranking

David Crockett High School assigns letter grades using a 4.0 system. Letter grades are assigned as follows:

A=93-100   B=85-92 C=75-84   D=70-74   F=69 and less

Advanced Placement courses are weighted by one point for any student who passes the AP course. Advanced courses are not weighted. All credit classes are included in computing grade point average and class rank. Grades are recorded on the transcript, and grade point averages are computed each semester. Class rank is computed at the end of seven semesters.
